Most likely every radio operator already knows the term SDR (Software Defined Radio) and many of them got to know this technology by the meanwhile very popular project PA3FWM ( -> read more about WebSDR) He placed the frontend, that is the operator interface, of the SDR-receiver in the internet. The chief attraction is: the receiver can be operated by many users at the same time and every user can choose his own mode and frequency and listen to it. Several people, no matter where they are, operate the same piece of hardware.

Simon, HB9DRV, known for his sensational software “Hamradio Deluxe”, “DM780” and “PSK Deluxe”, started another very exciting project called “SDR-RADIO”.

At first sight his new software is another frontend for SDR-devices. Just like all his software for ham radio, the new one also offers settings and functions you have to discover and try them out.

One button really gained my attention: “Remote via Network”. If you click at this button, you will get a list of radio operators who have enabled an access their own SDR-receivers. Right after I discovered this function I tried it a little disbelieving. Actually I instantly got access to a SDR-receiver of another radio operator far away from where I live.

As you can see, the software supports SDR-receivers of the company rfspace as well as Softrocks SDR Kits.

People who like to test the software and who don’t want to wait long for new functions can download the Beta-versions. At the moment I use version 1.1 built 417 beta. I unfortunately have to admit that I don’t have an SDR-receiver I could call my own right now. While writing this article, I liste to “SDR-RADIO” playing in the background, without any dropouts and I use the SDR-IQ by Simon, HB9DRV. The appetite for such a receiver grows and grows and it could be that shortly I am also to be found in the list of internet-SDR-receivers.

The operating of the software is absolutely not comparable with the websdr from Twente. In contrast to the mass of software, not only the ones concerning ham radio, you can feel that Simon obviously likes to “play” with his own program-developments or he listens to his users and implements a lot of the things they wish for. For instance the second slider to set the frequency is one of those little details with an enormous benefit for the operating comfort. So, you set the frequency with a slider and use the second slider to carry out the fine-setting, a mouse pointer you have to place with your fingertips is not necessary. A new function I discovered while writing this article is the “Broadcast-Database” – a filled KW / MW broadcasting station database. A click on one of the entries and I listen to the station on a receiver on the other end of my internet connection.
